45 min Inquiry
Last Saturday Mrs Mills went to Huntly to bow hunt for koi carp. She was hunting them because they are a pest. They eat native fish and their eggs. They pollute the water by stirring up the mud and it kills native trees. Koi carp can grow up to 80cm and can weigh up to 10kg.
Mrs Mills went bow hunting last weekend because the koi carp were spawning (breeding) and they come into the shallows to do this.
Bow hunting is a sport that requires a bow and arrow. You also need a line attached to the arrow so you can retrieve the fish and arrow. You do not need a license in NZ to bow hunt. It has been around since the Victorian era.
Mrs Mills caught 6 koi carp. She didn’t throw them back into the water because you can receive a fine. She left them on the side of the lake and they were taken by some fishermen.

Fly tying
For homework I tied a fly ( used to catch trout). The materials I used include a hook, deer hair, feathers, nylon thread and glue. To hold the fly in place I used a clamp. It took me 20 minutes to make a I named it 'The Sika' The name came from the type of deer hair I used. The fly is made to look like the trout food.

Camp happenings
The most exhausting moment on camp was when I climbed the Vertical Playpen for the second time. It took every bite of energy in my body to do it.
The biggest challenge on camp was when we were making our bivis and ‘someone’ decided to join our group and it was no fun because WE DO NOT GET ON at ALL.
The funniest moment on camp was when we were in the bush sitting around talking about near death experiencing and someone said “My mum had a near death experience” then
someone said “when you came out”.
3 things I learnt
1 Mr heart is very nice.
2 A Lot of people have a fear of heights.
3 It that mountain biking is ok.
2 things I was surprised about
1 That we leave the bush on the overnight camp.
2 People thou up in the food eating comp.
I question I still have why the did we leave the bush on the over camp.

Rimu tree study
Improve your study skills:
1. Research Rimu where do you find it?
2. Why is it important to Māori?
3. What uses does it have?
4. Why is Rimu the best tree in the school?
1. Rimu grows all over New Zealand in the North and South Islands, It grows in low-lying rain forests. Also Rimu is a slow-growing tree.
2. Rimu gum was/can be used to stop the bleeding of wounds. Also it was be used to treat internal bleeding and headaches.
3. It was widely used in the building of homes throughout New Zealand and today is found in furniture.
4.The Rimu tree is the best tree in the school because it lives every where in New Zealand and is a very tall canopy tree growing to a height of 35 to 50 metres.

My frogs
For my homework challenge I had to adopt a pet. I decided to adopt tadpoles that I found in a trough on a neighbouring property. After getting them I made an enclosure with an old fish tank. I added rocks, sticks, water and pebbles to make it as close to their natural habitat as possible. I kept them for three weeks and watched them grow into frogs. I fed them frozen lettuce, flies and other insects. I released them as frogs into a pond. Click here for some photos of the frogs.
